Why We Built STEM Activities for Kids

STEM Activities for Kids was founded by Meredith Anderson, a mechanical engineer with a graduate degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), after she spent years homeschooling her own children and realizing how challenging it was to find high-quality, classroom-ready STEM challenges that were also fun.

What started as a single blog grew into a collaborative platform with contributors from across the country; classroom teachers, STEM specialists, curriculum designers, and fellow engineers, all sharing the same frustration and the same passion.

“Our goal has never been to make kids memorize formulas. It’s to make them comfortable with not knowing the answer yet — and excited to find it.”

Today, STEM Activities for Kids is used by thousands of teachers and parents every month to find activities that are low-prep, high-engagement, and built around the engineering design process.

Together, we have:

200+

Combined years of experience as educators

2200+

STEM Activities designed by our team

1.3M+

Over 1.3 million resources sold from our contributors

We also have among us:

  • The creator of STEM Bins® (Brooke Brown) – Find them at Hand2Mind
  • A published author (Brittany Washburn) – Find her books on Amazon
  • A patented engineer (Meredith Anderson) – Read her patents at Google Patents
  • The founder of STEM Con & Beyond® conference (Kerry Tracy) – More about STEM Con & Beyond

Our Approach to STEM and the Engineering Design Process

01

🔧 Hands-on

Every activity is designed to be done, not just read about. Real criteria, real constraints, real brain-busting problem-solving.

02

🔄 Failure is expected, and encouraged

We create activities centered on the engineering design process. Students expect iteration once they learn the process!

03

📚 Curriculum-connected

Our activities are tied to real standards in science, math, and language arts, so they fit into your school day. We all have a special connection to STEM read aloud books.

04

🏡 Home & classroom ✏️

We pay attention to cost and ease of finding supplies, whether you are teaching one child at home or see 500 students at school. Most activities use everyday materials.

We Are Committed to Providing High-Quality, Rigorous STEM

One thing that all of our writers have in common is that we are passionate the the activities we create and recommend are meaningful. There are a lot of so-called STEM activities being shared online that are glorified crafts, or use expensive, difficult-to-source materials. One of our core goals is to provide rigorous yet age-appropriate activities that don’t break the bank!

We love the engineering design process and we follow it!
